CAR SECURITY

A Risk Control Manager in a top-notch security agency, By Ola Saheed,
As we pay attention to the maintenance of our cars so we pay attention to the security of our car.

We highlighted 7 key points that are so important for your car security

1. KEEP CAR KEYS OFF EYESIGHT
Reduce the habit of dropping your car key on your closest reach.
Always keep your keys out sight, as simple as it is, is often being dismissed
Look for a compartment away from the eyesight where you can drop your keys.
This will discourage car hijackers or arm robbers not to think of getting to your car
If you are in your office find a place to keep it may be inside the drawer but not on the table, don’t flaunt your car keys.

2. SECURE PARKING LOTS.
Do a quick assessment of parking lots in your environments
Pay attention to the Security of the parking
e.g – the barrier reef, the security personnel composure, security policies or protocols

When away from home, try and leave your car in a secure car park – one with a ticket barrier and a brilliant attendant.
If you have to park on the street, it is better to park in a busy, well-lit area where car hijacker can easily be seen

In driveways, make sure your house/estate driveway are secure with barrier reefs, or a garage with electronic gate machine and good personnel

3. HIDE VALUABLES
It’s not just car thieves you have to worry about, there are plenty of crooks out there who are simply after your valuables.

Therefore, never leave expensive goodies out on display within your car – it’s just too tempting for the opportunistic thief.

Clothes, watches, shoes jackets and sunglasses are still fair if taken, so make sure you hide them out of sight in the glove compartment or boot. @ www.confused.com

4. VIN MARKING/ETCHING or CAR ENGRAVING
Also known as engraving
Most times people engraved their plate numbers on the car parts like the mirror, windshield, and other various parts.

VIN etching is a cost-effective car security method and can easily be performed if your car did not come etched or marked by default. The process involves engraving a unique Vehicle ID Number (VIN) on several parts of the car such as windows, mirrors, or frames to make them instantly recognizable and therefore much harder to sell.
If thieves notice that a vehicle is etched, they will therefore probably move on to another car. In addition, this strategy will also prevent thieves from changing your car’s ID. (@carlock.com)

Marking can be as basic as writing on various parts with an ‘invisible’ ultra-violet pen, or as sophisticated as covering the car with thousands of microdots – each encoded with your identifiable details.
While there is no guarantee that etching will stop thieves from stealing a car, this technique can effectively help the POLICE recover a vehicle in the event of a theft.
Marking and etching are ways of stamping your car with a unique identifier.

5. CAR TRACKING SYSTEMS
Car tracking systems require a transmitter to be hidden in your car. If stolen, the vehicle can then be tracked and recovered.

There are two main types of tracker: GPS systems can find your car whilst it’s at street level, and VHF systems can find your car even if it’s hidden in an underground car park or storage container.

However, tracking systems can be quite expensive, often requiring a significant monthly subscription charge.
In recent times, sophisticated car thieves have devices that can jam GPS or VHS services.
It will be important to be swift in taking decisions in case a car is stolen.

6. FIX A CAR IMMOBILISER
An immobilizer will not prevent a thief from breaking into the vehicle, but it can successfully stop them from driving away with it. Even if a thief succeeds in starting an immobilized vehicle, it would take them a lot of time to get it moving, so they will probably think twice before stealing the car (carlock.com)
An immobilizer is an electronic device that prevents a car from being started by someone who doesn’t have the proper key.

Visit our website www.rundrive.com.ng to get a good car immobilizer engineer and a good GPS at a very affordable price in your area.

7. CAR ALARM
Car alarms serve as a theft-deterrent system and are designed to alert individuals if any unauthorized person tries to tamper with a vehicle @ www.carlock.com

The threat of a piercing sound and flashing lights is a powerful deterrent, recent technology has developed some alarms also come with a pager or mobile app to alert you if your car is being tampered with, the sound is being controlled by the app.

Tips on your Tire Pressure

Essential Tips on your Tire Pressure

As a motorist, you wonder why your gas mileage seemed a little lower than normal lately, or why your steering seems a little sluggish when you’re behind the wheel, or probably why your car just seems to be sitting closer to the ground than normal, it’s advisable to start with the components of your vehicle that should be touching the road: The tires, it might have an inflation issue.
The exact tire pressure is extremely important for getting good gas mileage and the most life out of your tires. All cars have a recommended tire pressure that will give the best gas mileage, handling, and tire life for that car. It’s written right on the vehicle’s door. It’s the proper guide to be followed when filling them up with air at the recommended pressure, measured in pounds per square inch, or psi.
On newer cars, the recommended tire pressure is most commonly listed on a sticker inside the driver’s door. If there’s no sticker on the door, you can usually find the specification in the owner’s manual. Most passenger cars will recommend 32 psi to 35 psi in the tires when they’re cold. The reason you check tire pressure when they’re cold is that as tires roll along the road, friction between them and the road generates heat, increasing both the temperature and the air pressure. For the most accurate reading, make sure the car has been sitting overnight or at least has been parked for a few hours.
Do not inflate your tires to the pressure listed on the tire itself. That number is the maximum pressure the tire can hold, not the recommended pressure for the vehicle.
Overinflation of your tires will give you a bouncy ride and an ill-handling car while driving on underinflated tires can cause premature wear from increased friction. Either way, not having your tires inflated to their recommended pressure will negatively affect tire wear and vehicle performance and will definitely affect your maintenance schedule when it comes to replacing them.

Changing Your Car Engine Oil

Changing your car engine oil and preventing oil leakages

1. Check the engine oil gauge regularly.
Once you have allowed the engine to run for a couple of days, it must have circulated very well. In order to know if there’s nothing wrong with the engine oil compartment, it’s important to check the gauge regularly.
First, make your check underneath your care frequently.
Next, check the oil level via the DIPSTICK. It should be between the MIN and MAX markings on the dipstick, although some vehicle manufacturers actually recommend the dipstick oil level to be at the MAX.
Lastly, check the splash guard
Use the recommended oil and oil filter
 2. Mechanics call this servicing. It is actually simple but there’s something you need to pay attention to if you’re not the one changing it yourself.
However, you might need to google check for your car manual to the engine oil and filter recommendation for your region
if you live in a warmer or even a colder place, then you might have to check the most appropriate engine oil for your vehicle based on environmental temperatures. It’s a good thing some manufacturers already have recommendations for such instances
3. Crank up your engine and let it run for about 5 minutes to allow the oil to become less viscous. This allows the oil to be easily drained.
4. Secure your car in a flat, stable, and even terrain and raise it. Use the use of an alligator-type hydraulic jack to raise your vehicle.
5. Remove the splash guard underneath your vehicle
Find the sump plug, you’ll need a wrench to unscrew it. Make sure to have an oil drain pan placed directly under the sump plug so once you remove the plug, the oil will flow straight into the pan.
Take this opportunity to clean the sump plug as well. change the crush washers to help prevent leaks.
 6. Use PMS or other cleaning agents to clean the clogs and oil dirt hanging at edges of  the flood guard
 7. If you have a car that comes with an insert oil filter which is typically located at the top of your engine, then it is advisable that you remove the oil filter first before draining the oil. This helps remove oil from the filter and channel it into the engine to be added into the oil to be drained afterward. If you remove the oil filter after draining the oil, then oil from the filter might still go back into the engine and this means you haven’t completely drained your engine. If your oil filter is the plate type – located at the bottom of the engine – then you can remove it after draining the oil.
 8. To remove the oil filter, you can use an oil filter remover or even ordinary sandpaper to increase your grip on the filter cap. Once removed, clean the compartment of the oil filter using old yet clean rags of cloth. Make sure that no sign of the old oil can be seen from the filter compartment.
 9. Replace oil filter, place the oil gasket and valve seals properly and replace the oil
 10. Document the oil change.
This is one step you should never forget. You need to document the oil change that you performed including the mileage that is shown on your vehicle’s odometer. This will give you an idea of when the next oil change will be. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend a change in oil and oil filter every 3,000 miles or every three months, whichever comes first.

What Causes Oil To Leak understand your car, Exactly?

Usually, it is due to degraded engine gaskets or oil seals. Sometimes these components will erode over time, but more likely than not, if you have this kind of leak, it’s because you have old, dirty oil—perhaps because you have not had your oil changed recently enough.

1. Damaged Oil Gaskets or Pans
Your vehicle’s oil pans and gaskets can easily be damaged by road debris since they are located at the bottom of the engine. Rough roads can lead to a hole which will cause an oil pan leak. The pan’s gasket usually suffers a lot of wear and tear, or it can also get damaged, which leads to an oil gasket leak.
 2. Incorrect Installations
It may happen that one of the gaskets that keep oil inside is Improperly installed. Most commonly, this happens when the oil pan gasket or valve cover gasket are over-tightened. It can also happen when tightness is not evenly distributed. Another reason can be the improper attachment of the oil filter, as the engine oil flows continuously through it, and if it’s loose, you can experience a leak there.
 3. Bad Rings or Valve Seals
Leaking rings or valve seals can also be contributing to your car losing oil. However, if there are no holes in your gaskets, the oil will not make it outside the engine, so you won’t notice it, as it will get burned up in the combustion process.

Regardless of the specific cause, it is urgent to stop an oil leak, so take your vehicle to the Meineke shop immediately. Following the oil leak, you may encounter the smell of burnt oil, followed by blue smoke and ultimately some major damage to your engine. Do not delay in addressing this issue.

CAR CARE TIPS AND TRICKS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW

A car is sure an important part of an household, or how better can a family transport themselves and enjoy both privacy and comfort. The unlimited benefits of owning a car for various purposes ranging from personal to business is overwhelming. However, as important as a vehicle is, it requires maintenance and care, which if not provided, the experience (however infrequent), may be awful. In this regards, we have put together some top tips that will not only help you prevent car breakdown, but as well improve the life expectancy of your vehicle.

As promised, below is a list of some tips you should know in regards to the maintenance of your car. These tips are intended to promote safety, minimize roadside emergencies, and enhance performance as well as reducing repair costs, or making it as negligible as possible, if these advices are adhered to.

  • Read the manufacturer’s manual

As a pro tip, comprehending the basic information written in the owner’s manual is an integral part of car maintenance. Conversely, most of us are found guilty of not paying attention to this item when we buy a new car. The owner’s manual not only gives the names of each car part, but also provides you with information that helps you optimize your car functions. These include how and what to check in your cars, when the checks should be done, and also what you should look out for. For example, type of light bulb to see in signal lights, type of engine oil you can use, among others. Do not forget to read your manual once you get that dream car of yours.

  • Learn what each warning indicator means

As a vital part of your car maintenance, it is advised that users know what each light is saying. You do not want to damage your car based on what could be prevented. The warning indicators are there to give timely prompts as to what is required of you at every given time; it might be an indicator that something might go wrong if you do not do the needful. These warning indicators ranges from electrical fault light, brake warning light, coolant warning light, oil warning light and so on. Kindly note that the warning signs ‘check engine light’ and ‘ABS warning light’ indicate a problem, which you should call a technician immediately. It is important you understand what these warning signs are and what they mean. In our subsequent posts, we would have a comprehensive discussion on this subject.

  • Check the battery terminals and clean frequently

Additionally, checking your car battery is important. The terminals should be checked to see if there are possible corrosions or mineral build up. In case there are, get a brush and clean it off immediately. This will enhance your car battery life, as you do not want to get disappointed starting your car on that morning you would be rushing to work. Furthermore, it is important you learn how to disconnect car batteries correctly. Always disconnect the negative terminal first; this will prevent short circuit occurrence.

  • Replace spark plugs

Ideally, users are expected to change spark plugs after a distance of 30,000 miles for the standard copper type, while for the advanced iridium type, distance could be up to 100,000 miles. I advise you enquire about the one your car is using. In all, once you see possible signs which include lack of acceleration, misfiring car engine, difficulty in starting engine, high fuel consumption, it could be an indicator for a malfunctioning spark plug. Replacing the plug is an easy task which you can perform yourself.

  • Check your engine coolant level

As part of what you should check from your manual, the engine coolant reservoir is one. A coolant system is fixed in all vehicles to prevent them from overheating. As we all know, a working engine is expected to generate heat, but the radiator has been put in place to reduce the heat produced to the point where it won’t cause damages to the working engine. It is thus important to check the level mark, so you can top up promptly once it is below the expected level mark.

  • Check oil levels

Mechanical engines generate frictions as there are a lot of parts rubbing against each other as they work. The oiling system helps fix the friction problem. They help in lubricating the moving parts to prevent wears. It is important to note that ignoring oil levels might cause long term damage to your vehicle, as it may lead to a permanent damage of your car engine. To check the oil level, there is usually a dipstick that is marked with ‘H’ and ‘L’. You should ensure that your oil level is between these two marks. It is also important that you wipe off the oil so you can see the marks clearly. Furthermore, the oil color matters as engine oil is meant to be amber in color. Black colored oil or any color outside the normal could indicate the presence of contaminants, above normal heats, among others.

  • Check your tires and wheels

Check your tires’ tread depth, tire pressures and alignment. Proper check will help you have a comfortable and safe drive and will also allow your tire last longer. A well treaded tire allows you drive smoothly on any surface, be it wet, dry, freezing or galloping. In contrast, tires with poor tread depth can be difficult to control on some surfaces, most especially wet; this may lead to poor handling which can cause accident. It is better you replace such tires as soon as possible.

To conclude, car care is quite simple. The little day-to-day actions can add up to producing lifelong positive results, while you experience no hassle in the maintenance of your car choice. All the aforementioned care tips are vital, and if followed through, your car usage experience will be worthwhile.

In our future posts, we will be teaching you how you can perform each and all these car care actions yourself in more details.

We hope you like it and we look forward to seeing you again.

HOW IMPORTANT IS CATALYTIC CONVERTER/(INDOMIE) IN A VEHICLE IMPORTANT TO THE ENVIRONMENT

Did you know 80% of vehicle on Nigerian roads are without catalytic converter? A metal object attach to the exhaust system, help to reduce poisonous emission from incomplete combustion.

They help to reduce incomplete combustion from the car engine using gasoline or diesel
this incomplete combustion produces chemicals like carbornmonoxide, hydrocarborns and nitrogenoxides.

They get to the atmosphere and deplete the ozone layer (remember, once the ozone layer is reduced, it affects the atmosphere especially the weather condition becomes irregular.

Too much of rain, too much of sun, too much of hazy weather, If the atmosphere is affected by CO, then our health is also in danger, if we inhale then we will need to detoxify.

People who drives directly behind a car without catalytic converter inhales CO, mixing with the blood and affecting the platelets in the blood (and if it’s too much we all know it can lead to death.

Nitrogenoxides produces acidic rain. Catalytic converters are necessary in order to combat/reduce smog and acid rain.

According to some research, catalytic converters reduce poisonous gas emission by 40%.

SIGNS THAT YOUR CATALYTIC CONVERTER IS HAVING ISSUE

  1. Engine misfire – It is caused by an interruption of the air-to-fuel ratio inside the combustion chamber in the cylinder An engine misfire causes the power to drop and reduces gas mileage.
  2. It also increases the vehicle’s emissions and can cause it to fail an emissions test.
  3. A severe misfire can cause the driver to feel a jerking action while driving.
  4.  Sudden Increase in fuel usage – when servicing is done, fuel converter needs to be checked
  5.  Poor Exhaust performance –

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR CATALYTIC CONVERTER
Rather than removing the catalytic converter, we are supposed to do a thorough maintenance servicing on it.

Can a catalytic converter be cleaned? Oh yes, let us tell you how.

We identified in the last post that the catalytic converter plays an important role in the emission systems of your car. It is the one responsible for the treatment of the emissions produced by the car engine, making sure that they do not cause serious damage to the other parts and to the environment

If it malfunctions or if it shows any signs of problems, a replacement is warranted. But most of the time, your mechanics get them removed because they do not know the importance, but now you do. To avoid the latter, regular cleaning is a must.

I will give you two effective methods

1. Use of hot water and degreaser

– Remove the catalytic converter from exhaust system using your mechanical tools of best fit, avoid worn out of nut by applying grease to nut joints.

– To start with the cleaning, use a cloth to remove any dirt or grime that you can find on the surface.

– Apply enough pressure to take it off, which can be quite difficult if it has already hardened.

– If there is debris, use a power washer to take it off. Pay attention to cleaning the inlet and outlet pipes, which probably have the highest concentration of dirt.

– At this point, if you can still see dirt, soak it in a mixture of hot water and degreaser. This will allow the dirt to soften, and as a result, will be easier to remove.

– After it is cleaned, allow the catalytic converter to dry for a while.

2. Use of sodium hydroxide

This is the same chemical used by professional AC repairers to wash the vents of AC compressors.
– Remove the catalytic converter from exhaust system using your mechanical tools of best fit, avoid worn out of nut by applying grease to nut joints.

– Inspect the converter for any damage. Shake the converter and listen for any noises.

Clean the catalytic converter.

– Use a cleaning cloth to wipe away any residue from the face of the converter.

– Soak the converter with portion sodium hydroxide and leave it for 30 minute

– Rinse it thoroughly.

Allow the converter to dry.

Re-insert the bolts into place.
